Adult Tournament Committee Member Spotlight: Andie Mouzes
Andie Mouzes started playing tennis at a young age. Although she didn’t live near a court, she and her sister got creative playing in their driveway with a rope tied up as a net.
That makeshift tennis court must have worked because Andie’s passion for tennis quickly grew and her parents signed her up for tennis lessons at eight years old. From there, she went on to play as a junior competing in several USTA NorCal tournaments and then playing college tennis at Sacramento State all four years with a great record.
And though tennis was a passion, “It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I began to commit to taking it very seriously and training intensely,” Andie said. “I was a late bloomer in the game, and I am happy it happened this way because I am so much more eager in my adult tennis career.”
Andie currently channels that sentiment and is very active in USTA NorCal Adult tournaments and Opens these days.
“My favorite USTA NorCal tournament memory is the 2019 Adult Grand Prix,” Andie said. “I was very dedicated to training physically and mentally with my coach, Daryl Lee for the end of the year tournament. And after multiple grueling matches over three days, I won the Women’s Singles Open and the Mixed Doubles Open division.”
And not only does Andie compete in Adult Tournaments, but she is also applying her passion for tennis at the community level and volunteers as a member of the USTA NorCal Adult Tournament Committee.
She first got involved when Mark Fairchilds, Director of Tennis at Laguna Creek Racquet Club, and member of several USTA NorCal committees, suggested she would be a good asset based on her experience with college tennis and competitive drive as a player.
“Being a long-term and current tennis player has helped me on the committee in many ways. I am able to draw from my experience with competing and what I did and didn’t like,” Andie added. “That way, as we move forward and make decisions, it hopefully has a positive impact with others in USTA NorCal.”
In addition to work, tennis training, and her volunteering, Andie is enrolled in the Police Academy with the ultimate goal to become a detective one day. While she says it can be difficult to balance all of it, she thrives off of hard work, dedicating her time to physical health and success in her career, and making an overall impact on the community.
“Our Adult committee has a diverse amount of experience among the members, and I really enjoy hearing the different perspectives on all the topics we cover,” Andie said. “I love being involved in this committee in my own community using my experience, as well as the experiences of other members.’”
