David N. Dinkins HBCU Coaching Grant

The USTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department, together with USTA Coaching, is pleased to offer the USTA David N. Dinkins HBCU Coaching Grant. This initiative provides funding of up to $3,000 per varsity tennis program at federally recognized Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The grant is designed to support the development of HBCU student-athletes and currently-uncertified coaches, as well as support the growth and sustainability of HBCU collegiate tennis programs. Through the USTA Coaching Intro to Coaching Workshop, participants gain both on-court instruction and online education, equipping them with valuable skills for personal growth and future career opportunities in tennis and beyond.

This grant reinforces the USTA's commitment to supporting HBCU collegiate tennis and increasing diversity among certified coaching professionals. Funding from the grants can be used toward expenses to support the HBCU tennis program, such as team travel expenses, uniforms, and equipment.

USTA Coaching will host free Intro to Coaching workshops for participating HBCU programs. These workshops will be hosted on their college campuses or a nearby location. To be eligible for funding, each program must have  a minimum of 5 players (and/or non-certified coaching staff) complete the workshop. Those interested can contact Darnesha Moore at darnesha.moore@usta.com to set up sessions.

The USTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department with USTA Coaching will offer up to $3000 per eligible tennis program upon completion of the grant application. Individual grant amounts will be tiered based on the number of participants (players and coaches) at each school. For example: A school that certifies a minimum of five (5) participants receives $1500; minimum of 10 participants receives $3000.

The grantee must be an enrolled student or a coach for the current academic year with a tennis program that is a current ITA member in good standing. Grant applications are due within thirty (30) days of completion of the workshop; applicants may be required to submit proof of workshop completion and number of student athletes in attendance. We also request that the student-athletes commit a minimum of five (5) hours volunteering with their local NJTL either while in college or within the first year after graduation.
