Lincoln Challenger pro tournament draws record crowds in successful third year
The Lincoln Challenger ATP men’s professional tennis tournament was held at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center from July 12-19. This year’s event sold around 1,500 tickets — almost two times the amount of 2025 — according to Peter Kobelt, tournament organizer and University of Nebraska-Lincoln men’s tennis head coach.
This year’s USTA Pro Circuit tournament was moved back outside, like its inaugural one in 2024, and had a number of new attractions such as kids’ events, pickleball and more.
The 90-degree temperatures didn’t keep spectators away either. Jennifer Powell attended most of the matches over the course of the week.
“It was so amazing to have professional tennis so close to home,” said Powell, who had a courtside seat for the action. “My favorite part was picking a few of my favorite players and cheering for them throughout the week. The setup made it so you were so close to the action, and the players were interactive with the crowd. It was such a fun time. I can’t wait for it next year.”
Julie Obear was also at the tournament over the entire week and enjoyed meeting the players and seeing them up close. She has been to all three Lincoln Challengers and said she is excited to have an event of this caliber in Lincoln.
“This year I feel like they got it right,” she said. “The size of the tournament really lends itself to allow the spectators to closely interact with the players. Getting to pick players to cheer for and having them respond directly to you and show appreciation for your support is pretty cool.”
Added Lisa Wilkinson, who attended two of the sessions: “It was spectacular tennis. The players seemed to give it their all, and that’s what is greatly appreciated here in Lincoln. The volunteers were so helpful and friendly, and the ballpersons deserve medals for working in the heat.”
Australia’s Bernard Tomic beat Estonia’s Mark Lajal, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, to claim the singles title.
In doubles action, Nebraska’s own Jackson Withrow and his partner, Nathaniel Lammons, beat American George Goldhoff and Canadian Cleeve Harper, 6-3, 6-3, to win the championship.
