Kathy Hinrichs of Destrehan, La., was honored with the USTA League Organizer Award at the USTA Annual Meeting & Conference in Orlando, Fla. The award, established in 2015, recognizes and honors the many volunteers who have provided leadership and made significant contributions to the growth and enhancement of USTA Leagues, both in their sections and nationally.
Hinrichs has been a transformative leader in USTA leagues for 30 years, with a career marked by significant growth at local, sectional, and national levels. As local league coordinator, she grew the New Orleans program to 600 players in its first year and was a driving force in founding the New Orleans Metropolitan Area Tennis Association (NOMATA), where she served four terms as president.
Her leadership was particularly impactful following Hurricane Katrina, where she navigated the Louisiana Tennis Association (LTA) through recovery and rebuilding efforts and served as tournament director for the section mixed championship. Hinrichs pioneered Louisiana's first Tennis Apprentice program and was one of only four people nationwide selected by the USTA to launch a 10-and-under junior pilot program.
Her extensive resume includes serving as President of USTA Louisiana and chairing the USTA Southern League Committee for 10 years, during which she implemented the 2013 age restructuring and managed various sectional championships.
At the national level, she spent 10 years on the League Committee, eventually serving as vice chair and helping to navigate the program through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Kathy’s dedication to USTA leagues has made a lasting impact at every level of the game,” said Brian Vahaly, USTA President and interim co-CEO. “She brings consistency, care, and a deep commitment to the player experience. We’re grateful for everything she’s done to strengthen and grow leagues in her community and beyond.”
Today, USTA League provides play opportunities for hundreds of thousands of adult participants. It is the country's largest recreational tennis league, helping players nationwide enjoy the thrill of competition while making friends, improving skills and staying active. USTA League offers several programs throughout the year that vary by gender, age, and skill level. Division formats also vary by offering singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
