Residente de CT representa al equipo de EE. UU. en los Juegos Maccabiah en Israel
SHELTON, CT- Marcy Cohen, de Shelton, CT, pasó el mejor momento de su vida representando a su país, religión y cultura, mientras competía en el 20aniversario de los Juegos Mundiales Maccabiah en Israel del 4al17 de julio. . Cohen representó al equipo de EE. UU. y compitió con y contra 8,750 de los mejores atletas judíos de 80 países.
“La experiencia fue abrumadora de una manera fantástica porque estaban sucediendo muchas cosas allí”, dijo Cohen. “Al competir por tu país y ser judío, estaba muy feliz de estar allí y de tener esta oportunidad. Me sentí como si ganaras una medalla solo por competir y yo me sentí como un ganador simplemente por estar allí”.
Cohen, que dirige la Academia de Tenis Marcy's en Shelton, fue uno de los 1,250 atletas judíos-estadounidenses que hicieron el viaje y compitieron en la división Masters Team Tennis, durante las edades 45-60. Jugó seis partidos tanto en individuales como en dobles y se enfrentó a jugadoras de Israel, Brasil, Argentina y Chile. Su única victoria fue en individuales contra Israel.
"Algunas personas fueron a hacer turismo, a sumergirse en la cultura o incluso a buscar pareja, pero mi principal objetivo era el tenis, así que realmente no tenía ninguna distracción", dijo Cohen. "Fue increíble las amistades que hicimos, intercambiar ropa y pines con nuestros oponentes y otros jugadores, y simplemente ver la amabilidad que hay entre los atletas".
Los juegos comenzaron con una elaborada ceremonia de apertura en Jerusalén, que Cohen describió como electrizante.
“Poder hablar con todos estos atletas judíos de todo el mundo fue realmente una sensación genial. La ceremonia de apertura reunió a jugadores de todas las edades y la mayor emoción fue que todos eran judíos”, dijo Cohen. “La religión es pequeña y lo mejor fue ser parte de ese grupo tan singular. Realmente te animó a competir”.
Cohen llegó a los juegos sin expectativas y, aun así, salió con toda una vida de recuerdos, nuevos amigos y una experiencia de tenis única en la vida.

The Friendship Cup has a rich history and successful story of establishing international camaraderie and sisterhood both on and off the court. The tradition started in 1967 when Walter Foeger of Vermont was looking to establish competitive senior tennis play in alliance with the New England Lawn Tennis Association (NELTA), now USTA New England. He contacted George Barta of the Canadian senior division, and together, they created the Friendship Cup. In that year, players competed on three courts at the Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Read More
