WINT FILIPEK SR. TORNEO MEMORIAL PRESENTA $10,000 CHEQUE A USTA NEW ENGLAND
MERIDEN, CT- La relación de larga data entre la USTA Nueva Inglaterra y el Wint Filipek Sr. Memorial Tennis Tournament alcanzó nuevas alturas cuando el fundador del torneo, Wint Filipek Jr., le presentó a USTANE un cheque por $10,000. El dinero se destinará a servir a niños de comunidades desfavorecidas de Connecticut a través de programación de tenis.
“Nuestra declaración de misión es doble; es para dar becas en nombre de mi padre y promover el crecimiento del tenis. Sabemos que nuestra misión se alinea con la de la USTA Nueva Inglaterra, por lo que estamos entusiasmados de que utilicen el dinero y hagan crecer el tenis en Connecticut”, dijo Filipek Jr.
Filipek Jr. comenzó el torneo anual en 2005 con familiares y amigos como una manera de continuar con el legado de su padre, Winton S. Filipek Sr. El torneo sigue siendo uno de los más grandes de Nueva Inglaterra y atrajo casi 600 inscripciones en 2018.
La USTA Nueva Inglaterra ha apoyado continuamente el Torneo Filipek, que otorga $10,000 en becas a estudiantes-atletas de Connecticut cada año. Hasta la fecha, el evento ha presentado más de $140,000 en becas.
"Nos sentimos increíblemente honrados y agradecidos con Wint y toda la comunidad del torneo por su generosa donación, y esperamos continuar haciendo crecer el tenis juvenil en todo Connecticut", dijo Matt Olson, director ejecutivo y director de operaciones de la USTA New England.
El torneo se juega cada año durante la primera semana de junio en Cheshire, CT, y atrae a jugadores de todo Connecticut y más allá. El torneo presenta 24 divisiones de edad.

The Friendship Cup has a rich history and successful story of establishing international camaraderie and sisterhood both on and off the court. The tradition started in 1967 when Walter Foeger of Vermont was looking to establish competitive senior tennis play in alliance with the New England Lawn Tennis Association (NELTA), now USTA New England. The USTA announced that Xander Barber, of Falmouth, Maine, was named the male recipient of the 2023 USTA National Junior Scholar Athlete Award. Barber recently graduated from Falmouth High School after relocating to Maine from Asheville, N.C., ahead of his senior year. His impact on the tennis court was felt immediately as Barber led Falmouth to a state championship and was named the state’s Player of the Year. Read More
