Foco voluntario: Rachel Smith
BRIDGEPORT, CT- Rachel Smith tiene pasión por el servicio. Su trabajo de tiempo completo es directora de servicios juveniles en Hall Neighborhood House en Bridgeport, CT, aunque para ella es más que un trabajo. Creció en los proyectos de Bridgeport y ahora trabaja allí y retribuye a la comunidad que tanto le dio.
La misión de Hall Neighborhood House es “Proporcionar servicios que eduquen, enriquezcan y fortalezcan las vidas de los residentes de todas las edades del East Side de Bridgeport y la comunidad circundante”, y Smith es el epítome de eso.
Ha trabajado diariamente con niños desatendidos en Hall dentro y fuera de la cancha de tenis desde 2000 y ha estado en el campo del desarrollo juvenil durante 25 años.
“No puedo huir del servicio. Creo que cuanto más pones, más obtienes”, dijo Smith.
Además de su día a día, Smith enseña tenis 10 y Under en Hall los sábados, se desempeña como miembro de la junta directiva de USTA Connecticut, así como de USA Lacrosse CT y Bridge Academy High School. Es voluntaria en el Ejército de Salvación, como instructora de la Cruz Roja y es miembro de Love146 en New Haven.
Ha sido voluntaria en el CT Open, la lección gratuita del CT Open con Sloane Stephens y varios otros eventos de tenis en las comunidades de Greater Bridgeport y New Haven.
Actualmente, está entrenando para el maratón de la ciudad de Nueva York el 5 de noviembre, su primer maratón. Ella representa al equipo Dylan's Wings of Change y se postula en nombre de Sandy Hook's Promise.

Congratulations to the July USTA League Captains of the Month, Sam Rubin, of Brookline, MA and Hilary Holm, of Whitefield, ME! Sam Rubin started as a Social Tennis League player, where he’s played in Boston area sites for years. It was there he found out about the opportunity to serve as a captain of the 18-39 league out of Eastern Mass. The Friendship Cup has a rich history and successful story of establishing international camaraderie and sisterhood both on and off the court. The tradition started in 1967 when Walter Foeger of Vermont was looking to establish competitive senior tennis play in alliance with the New England Lawn Tennis Association (NELTA), now USTA New England. He contacted George Barta of the Canadian senior division, and together, they created the Friendship Cup. In that year, players competed on three courts at the Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. Read More
