Committee Member Spotlight: Jamel Madison

When Jamel Madison stepped into volunteer leadership with USTA Texas, he came with a clear purpose: to bridge the gap between local grassroots efforts and statewide impact. As a 35-year-old Black tennis coach, Madison recognizes the power of representation at the decision-making table. Rather than remaining on the sidelines, he actively channels his experience on the court to introduce fresh perspectives, challenge the status quo, and drive the evolution of the sport across the Lone Star State.

Serving as a dedicated member of the USTA Texas Advocacy & Facilities Committee, Madison is focused on creating a lasting legacy that opens doors for future generations. He proves that young, diverse leaders not only have a place in executive spaces—they are essential to the growth and future of Texas tennis.

Q&A with Advocacy & Facilities Committee Member Jamel Madison:

USTA Texas: ¿Por qué empezaste a ser voluntario en USTA Texas?

Jamel Madison: I wanted to make an impact beyond just my local community. I felt like I had ideas that could help grow the game across Texas, and I also wanted to hear what was working in other parts of the section. Most importantly, I wanted to represent my generation and show that we belong in these spaces. If we want things to change, we have to be willing to get involved.

USTA Texas: ¿Cuál fue la parte más gratificante de tu experiencia?

Madison: The most rewarding part has been seeing the work our committee has done actually make a difference. I’ve also really enjoyed building relationships with the other volunteers. We all come from different backgrounds, but we’re working toward the same goal, and those connections have meant a lot to me.

USTA Texas: What is one thing you want prospective committee applicants to know about serving with USTA Texas?
