USTA and the sport of tennis has lost one of its best and brightest with the passing of Carole Graebner. She was named USTA Eastern Tennis Association Woman of the Year in 1989. She also was a vice president of Tennis Week magazine and a radio and television commentator.
A reminder that returning the completed census form is required to secure your voting privileges in the upcoming 2009 election of officers. All completed forms must be received in the USTA Eastern office by Friday, December 12, 2008.
New Jersey residents were formerly categorized under Eastern’s “Southern” region. However, changes have been underway and now the “New Jersey” district is officially its own region! With college applications beginning to pile up, high school tennis players in the Eastern section had a chance to make the process a little easier by attending USTA Eastern’s 23rd Annual College Showcase Day Sunday, November 9, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Each year, USTA Serves awards scholarships to deserving youngsters who have participated in United States Tennis Association (USTA) and other organized youth tennis programs. Apply by February 9, 2009.
Eastern player, Bob Litwin (Glenwood Landing, NY), was the playing captain of the 2008 Von Cramm Cup. This October, the team competed in Antalya, Turkey attempting to win the Cup for the fourth year in a row.
Metro 3.5 ladies take 4th at Nationals. “We were all somewhat surprised that we went as far as we did,” said captain, Susan Peck. “We sort of saw ourselves as the ‘Bad News Bears’ of tennis,” she joked.
The Westchester 4.5 Senior women took third place, October 24-26, at the National Championships in Tucson, Arizona. The team, named “Good Friends,” defeated the team from Portland, Oregon, 2-1.
