Tucson, Ariz. --- Due to impending threat of rain for tomorrow afternoon, the semifinals and finals rounds of the 2.5, 7.0, and 9.0 National Championships have been moved from Sunday to the late afternoon/early evening on Saturday night.
Tournament Director Pam Leibfreid commented on the tournament’s staff decision to reschedule Sunday’s matches.
"We have rescheduled the semifinals and finals rounds due to the threat of rain on Sunday," she said. "The players already have flights home scheduled for Sunday and we can’t take a chance on having the weather decide if we have the matches or not. Some of the players were concerned about the forecast, and they are very appreciative that we have addressed the situation and made the decision early, rather than waiting until the last minute."
The 9.0 semifinals will now take place at 2 p.m. local time in Tucson, with the finals and 3rd/4th place matches taking place at 4 p.m.
The 7.0 semifinals will now take place at 4 p.m. local time, with the championship rounds taking place under the lights at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The final round of the 2.5 round-robin play is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
"The players are all being very cooperative and understanding," Darcy Cobb, of the tournament staff said. "It is better to play extra matches in one day rather than flipping a coin on Sunday to determine who wins."
It will be a long day of tennis for the teams involved in the semifinals and finals rounds, but it will be worth it to play out the matches on Saturday, instead of risking a rainout on Sunday afternoon.
