Nate McLain and Alexsey Zharinov rocked the Plaza with their band Sika last night. Today the duo plays in the Aquatennial Plaza Tennis Classic doubles championships at 11:30 a.m.
Lauren Hom and Sierra Krebsbach claimed the women's doubles title, while John Schollmeier and Kevin Whipple won the men's crown Thursday at the 2008 Boston Scientific Aquatennial Plaza Tennis Classic at One Financial Plaza in downtown Minneapolis. The tournament concludes on Friday with the men's and women's singles finals and the mixed doubles final. The women’s singles final is at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men’s singles final at 12 noon and the mixed final at 1:30 p.m.
The USTA, the governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S., today announced the nine players, including Oakdale's Jon Rydberg, who will represent the United States and compete in the 2008 Paralympic Games, September 6-17 in Beijing, China. The U.S. will be one of 34 countries represented among the 112 wheelchair tennis competitors vying for gold in the men’s, women’s and the quad events.
Seven sites around the Section hosted to the 2008 USTA Northern Jr. Team Tennis (JTT) Area Championships during the week of July 14-19. The seven locations included Brainerd, Minn., White Bear Lake, Minn., St. Cloud, Minn., Shakopee, Minn., Anoka, Minn., Eau Claire, Wis., and Sioux Falls, S.D. Winners of the seven area championships, along with a pre-determined number of teams based on the size of the area championship advanced to the USTA Northern JTT Section Tournament July 28-31 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.

USTA Northern is seeking applications from volunteers for its Councils and Committees for 2009-10. Applications must be submitted to USTA Northern by October 1, 2008. Ruby Rott was just looking for a little competition. A local USTA League Tennis presented by Chrysler player, she had been to two National Championships over the years at the 3.0 level, but was still yearning to play competitive singles. She contacted USTA Northern Adult Tournament Coordinator Nancy Lundberg, who suggested she try her hand at the USTA National 65-75-85 Indoor Tournament in Kansas City.
