Bryans retire from Davis Cup play

E.J. Crawford | January 22, 2017

The American kings of Davis Cup doubles are stepping aside.

Bob and Mike Bryan have announced their retirement from the international team event, leaving as the winningest doubles team in U.S. Davis Cup history and as the fifth-most successful pairing in Davis Cup history. The Bryans went 24-5 as a team in their Davis Cup careers, which date back to 2003, when the brothers teamed for the win in what would prove to be a 3-2 U.S. victory over Slovakia.

"On behalf of the USTA, I would like to thank Bob and Mike Bryan for their years of outstanding play and unwavering commitment to the United States Davis Cup team,” said USTA President Katrina Adams. “Since 2003, they have served as grand ambassadors for our sport and our country, brilliantly exemplifying the spirit and sportsmanship of international team competition, both on and off the court.”

The highlight of the Bryans’ Davis Cup careers came in 2007, when they went 4-0 to lead the U.S. to the Davis Cup championship, securing the title in the final against Russia (shown above).

“Clinching the Davis Cup Final in 2007 while representing Team USA was one of the greatest highlights of our career,” the Bryans said in a statement. “We've been blessed to play for two amazing captains, Patrick McEnroe and Jim Courier, and we are extremely grateful for their leadership and trust over these last 14 years.

“Also, we'd like to extend our dearest gratitude to our fellow teammates, USTA staff, our friends and family, and the passionate fans who have been there for us on this incredible journey. We are indebted to you all for your loyal support.”

In addition to their records as a tandem, Mike Bryan owns the U.S. record for most ties played with 31 and most doubles wins with 26, while Bob holds the record for most years played, at 14.

The U.S. Davis Cup team is back in action in the World Group First Round against Switzerland in Birmingham, Ala., Feb. 3-5. The players representing Team USA will be announced this coming week.
