Volunteer Opportunities

Do you have a passion for the game of tennis? Ideas about how we can attract and retain more players?  An interest in giving back to a sport that shaped your identity?  Availability to serve?  If so, we want you!  

As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, we are governed by a volunteer board of directors and rely on the support and expertise of various committees to make sound decisions and advance our work.  We also utilize volunteers to support our professional staff in project and event execution.  Volunteers are critical to our work, and whether your interest is in a two-year appointment to a leadership role or you simply want to sign up to help on a specific day, all gifts of service help to advance our mission.

• Apply by September 15, 2026 to be considered for a Board Member At-Large position 

• Apply by November 7, 2026 to be considered for a committee appointment  

   

Board candidates with prior committee involvement are highly valued.  Our active committees for the 2027-2028 term are listed below.  To learn more about the required time commitment and skills required for various committees, please email admin@northern.usta.com to be connected to the appropriate committee liaison.  

• Volunteer Development/Governance - Oversees board composition, recruitment, orientation, development, and performance. to gain a better understanding of our organization.  

   

• Finance - To oversee the financial health of USTA Northern, ensuring sound fiscal practices in the areas of budgeting, investments, and overseeing an independent auditor.

   

• Adult Competition - To improve competitive play opportunities for adults, including the review of policies and regulations for USTA-sanctioned adult leagues and tournaments.

   

• Junior Competition - To improve competitive play opportunities for juniors, including the review of policies and regulations for USTA Northern-sanctioned play.  This committee also sets the criteria for awarding junior tournament sanctions and selection for competitive player development opportunities.

   

• Sportsmanship - To improve sportsmanship at USTA-sanctioned events.       

   

• Grievances - To investigate and adjudicate grievances in relation to USTA Northern sanctioned competition.     

   

• Junior Scholarships - To ensure that all kids have access to the game, with particular attention to USTA-sanctioned programs.  This committee reviews and approves scholarship requests.

   

• Grants - To thoughtfully manage the review and approval process of grant requests from USTA Northern organizational members.   

   

• Awards & Recognition - To recognize deserving members of the community for their tennis achievements and contributions.  This committee is responsible for researching potential Hall of Fame candidates, reviewing nominations for section awards, and choosing nominees for national awards that must be submitted by the section.

   

• Annual Meeting & Conference - to assist with planning and execution of our educational conference and gathering of tennis leaders across the section
