2019 North South Wheelchair Tennis Challenge
The 9th annual North/South Wheelchair Tennis Challenge took place on October 19th & 20th at the beautiful location of Copper River Country Club in Fresno California. Dee Henry, former Biola University coach and USTA’s Brad Parks award recipient, fielded a hopeful team led by “One More Push”, Tony Lara and Atif Moon. USTA NorCal’s own TSR, Christy Perez, also fielded a talented and hungry team led by Marcus Causton.
Play consisted of both singles and doubles matches. Each section fielded a team composed of Open, A, B, and C players. At the conclusion of day 1, Northern California had jumped out to an early lead of 9-2. A casual dinner with both teams concluded the day and each team handed out a Sportmanship award to the opposing team. Northern California Sportsmanship recipient was Carlos Reynoso.
The final day of play began at 9am on Sunday and concluded with NorCal edging out SoCal with a score of 16-7. NorCal has retained the trophy for the 2nd year in a row. Other notable participants include brothers, David VanBrunt and Mike Applegate, who went undefeated for the weekend. We look forward to another great year of wheelchair tennis and will be back at Copper River Country Club next year for the 10th annual North/South Wheelchair Challenge with hopes of retaining the cup!
