  • While many view tennis as a great sport for exercise, its benefits reach far beyond health. And that could not be more true for Madison Elementary School in Fresno, CA. For the past seven years, Madison Elementary School has been offering USTA NorCal’s H.I.T.S. programming as a pathway to expose their students to tennis, a sport they typically might never have access to, and promote their personal development both on and off the court. According to the nonprofit Recycle Balls, tennis players in the United States alone trash 125 million balls into landfills every year.     The pandemic was a challenging time for everyone, but amid all of the uncertainty, one local Northern California tennis club was able to restore a sense of community throughout. Woodland Tennis Club had a full treasury and was one of the only clubs to have open courts, so they decided to establish the Woodland Tennis Club Youth Scholarship Committee to offer scholarships to the youth of Woodland to increase the number of student-age kids that are exposed to tennis and develop their skills.     What started as a way to give kids in the community a structured opportunity to play and promote their well-being, has now flourished into an annual tennis experience for the youth in the City of Merced.   Led by Lam Kindavong, the City of Merced Parks and Recreation Department just wrapped its fifth year of offering a free tennis summer program using NorCal’s H.I.T.S. programming that focuses on teaching kids both tennis and life enrichment skills.   • The Gay & Lesbian Tennis Federation (GLTF) is on a mission – organize tennis that is inclusive and offer a dedicated safe space for all members of the community to play.   And since their start in 1980, they’ve been doing that and more. Read More
  • The Wave Program was first created in 2016 to fulfill a need in the small Pacific Grove community – encourage the development and support of recreational programs for the youth of Pacific Grove. The program opened in the summer of 2017 and is a free two-week summer day camp for girls and boys, ages 10, 11, and 12 to experience athletics, the arts, and education in health, nutrition, and fitness in harmony with activities and classes with Pacific Grove High School (PGHS).   • Linda Glassel has a long history with tennis that began as a 10-year-old and has led to careers with Wilson and Prince, and now, a volunteer with the Tennis Coalition of San Francisco. “I was connected to the Tennis Coalition through a colleague that was on the Advisory Board of a nonprofit I was running in San Francisco,” she said. “He connected me to a board member that he knew, and I was hooked on getting involved.” Read More
  • The gleaming new exterior of the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center at Golden Gate Park is what catches many eyes but not everyone might know everything that’s happening inside it. One of those buildings is the Koret Teaching and Learning Center classroom which recently welcomed its first middle school students as part of the San Francisco Parks and Recreation department’s Tennis and Learning Center program.   • Aby Ryan first conceived the idea for Athena Camps when her daughter started kindergarten.  The year her daughter started coincided with class sizes going up from 20 kids to 30. Ryan was shocked to see groups of five-year olds already running around in cliques and separated in groups at such a young age.  Read More
  • At the start of 2020, Adult League player Val Swan was the healthiest she’d ever been. After suffering from autoimmune diseases for much of her life, she finally felt like she was past them and living. She’d rediscovered tennis after a nearly 20-year absence, which was also doing wonders for her health. She was in the best shape of her life and had even inadvertently lost weight. Read More

  • Not much goes to waste at Rohnert Park Tennis Club - and that includes tennis balls. It’s no secret that with every hit from a racquet, balls become a little bit less effective and lose a little bit more bounce. Rohnert Park runs numerous leagues at three different levels and they were generating a high volume of balls without the ability to reuse them. Read More

Taking place at the famous Mission Dolores Park, in San Francisco, CA, on July 12, 2019, it was a full day of celebration.     Giuliana Olmos is a professional tennis player ranked 349 in the world in singles and 65 in the world doubles. A 26 years old Fremont native, Giuliana played for the University of Southern California in college before going on the pro circuit for the last four years. The oldest of three girls, tennis has been a common thread as both her sisters, Sarah and Zoe also play tennis. A common ground for the family, the sisters talk about what tennis has meant to them and how tennis fits in their lives. Read More
  • The USTA’s US Open Series event, Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, scorched through San Jose in a hot week, both on and off the courts. Our Membership booth was set up all week where spectators could stop for information about programming, get an autograph from an awesome player, test their serve’ speed or do some cool social media stunts.
