  • USTA NorCal extends a big congratulations to the Harker School girls tennis team out of San Jose for completing a historic 2021 season where they finished undefeated in league play, earned their second consecutive Central Coast Section (CCS) championship, and went on to win the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Northern California championship for the first time in the program’s history.     In team sports, it’s important to measure success based on the work put in and how a team has worked together throughout the entire season to achieve one goal — do the best your team can do. And for 42 teams in the USTA Junior Team Tennis (JTT) Local Leagues South Bay fall season, that meant capping off their season with playoffs in early December to earn a shot at claiming the ultimate title of number one.   • Mountain House Sports Club in San Joaquin County, CA recently hosted its first USTA Team Challenge on the Mountain High School tennis courts, and it was one for the books. Run by Dinesh Kumar, a professional tennis coach, Mountain House Sports Club brought together over 100 players on Halloween for a day full of tennis in orange, green, and yellow ball levels in a fun social setting.   • Junior Team Tennis (JTT) is back after a two-year hiatus and it’s gotten a facelift.  The Local Leagues track will remain the same, however, the Championship JTT track will now include two qualifying events that will lead to Sectionals and the Gar Glenney Cup (the annual State Cup against Southern California), and eventually the National Championships.   • Tennis became a passion early in Lukas Burger’s life and has continued to this day. He started playing at age 12 and grew up competing in USTA NorCal tennis alongside his brother and now coaches in many of the same places he grew up playing at.   While the transition from player to coach can be challenging for some, it was both a natural and gradual progression for Burger, who got his first coaching opportunity at the age of 15 working with kids eight and under with Red ball tennis. And now, that’s one thing that avid tennis player Angela Ho can cross off the list.   Ho, a junior player in Northern California who is active in USTA NorCal tennis, won tickets to this year’s U.S. Open through a contest held by USTA NorCal.     For the Togasaki family, tennis is an integral part of their life and they are each an active community member in their own right. A native of Northern California, John Togasaki has been playing or working in tennis in some capacity since he was a young kid. His wife Nadja also grew up playing tennis with her family and has continued to play into adulthood.   When it came time to expand their family, it was only natural for them to get their daughter Steffi, whose name was inspired by top women’s player Steffi Graff, involved in tennis early.   • Vern Leslie first started assisting with 12 and under junior.circuits s at the Palo Alto Tennis club in 2012 while he was coaching middle school tennis for the city of Palo Alto. He used that opportunity to learn all he could from the event hosts, and then he decided a year later he was ready to administer junior circuits on his own. Read More

  • Taking place over three days at the prestigious Stanford University, in Stanford, CA, the Pacific Coast 10’s Exchange once again gave place to fantastic tennis on September 27-29. Read More
  • Talking on the phone with Katie Volynets, it was apparent the excitement of her victory hadn’t worn off yet a couple days after. Granted, she had a great reason to be happy. The Walnut Creek resident had just realized her lifelong dream: qualifying for the main draw of the US Open. On Sunday, August 11, the 17-year-old defeated Charleston’s Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-4 to win the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18 National Hard Court Championship. Thanks to that win, Katie earned a Wild Card into the US Open main draw. Read More

    On August 10-11, 36 teams and 190 players gathered in Fresno, CA, to crown the section champions in the Same Gender 12U, 15U, and 18U Intermediate and Advanced divisions. Over the two days, players enjoyed cooler than usual 90 degree weather to battle for the section champions. For all of the 15U and 18U divisions, teams competed for a chance to represent NorCal in the Gar Glenney Cup against Team SoCal. Read More
