Information on The Callen Cup

The Callen Cup had previously been called the Southern Senior Cup. It was renamed by the USTA Southern Board of Directors in July 2021 for the late John Callen, who was USTA Southern Executive Director and COO for 33 years.

Huntsville Tennis Center to host tournament

The Callen Cup, a Level 4 Closed tournament, will be played at Huntsville Tennis Center, 2305 Airport Rd SW, Huntsville, AL, 35801-5391, May 30-June 4.

 

Here are some of the detials. For all tournament info, please go to the tournament page.

  • 65s & 75s will play Tuesday, May 30 - Friday, June 2. (Prelims only play on Tuesday at 3:30 CDT.)
  • 35s, 45s & 55s will play Thursday, June 1 - Sunday, June 4. (Prelims only play on Thursday at 3:30 CDT.).
  • Match times listed will be for singles play and once those lines are on court updated to the doubles times.
  • Teams in preliminary matches will be posted on the draws and here on Friday, May 5.

South Carolina takes Mildred Southern Cup

In the first year of The Callen Cup – named in honor of the late USTA Southern Executive Director & COO John Callen – South Carolina was the big winner.

 

The competition was played at the Pelham (Ala.) Racquet Club, under the supervision of Tournament Director Tom Burnham. All matches were on clay and ran from May 31 to June 5. A big thank you goes out Pelham for hosting another terrific event and the tournament staff who made all the fabulous tennis played possible. 

 

The Palmetto State captured 67 points in the combined 10-level competition and earned the Mildred Southern Cup. Second place went to Alabama with 62 points. The margin for third place was razon-thin with Georgia having 53 points while Tennessee barely edged North Carolina, with 51 and 50.25 points respectively.

The Gil Stacy Cup for courts won was taken by South Carolina with 57 courts with Georgia and North Carolina tying for second place, three behind South Carolina.

 

The competition was played at the Pelham (Ala.) Racquet Club, under the supervision of Tournament Director Tom Burnham. All matches were on clay and ran from May 31 to June 5.

  • Men’s 75s: South Carolina

 

Thank you to all the players who showcased their tremendous skills on the court and camaraderie off it. Next year’s competition is expected to be May 30 – June 4, 2023 with the location still to be determined. If interested in representing your state, make certain to reach out to your State Office.
