Best Men's Grand Slam Performance - Rajeev Ram wins Australian Open men's doubles title
A decorated doubles player for much of the past decade, veteran Rajeev Ram secured an accomplish that was long missing from his resume by winning his first major title in men's doubles Down Under.
The 2019 champion in mixed with Barbora Krejcikova, the 35-year-old Ram partnered Great Britain's Joe Salisbury for a second Australian Open trophy 12 months later. The pair, seeded No. 11, lost just one set en route to the title, and defeated Australian wild cards Max Purcell and Luke Saville in the final, 6–4, 6–2. Ram had previously reached the semifinals at the 2014 US Open and at Wimbledon in 2016, and seven other men's doubles quarterfinals at majors before his efforts this January.
Ram's win earned the most votes on a ballot that included a 25th Grand Slam title for the legendary David Wagner in Paris, a quarterfinal showing by Tennys Sandgren in Australia and a major milestone for Sebastian Korda in Paris, where he qualified and reached the fourth round before losing to Rafael Nadal.
Best Women's Grand Slam Performance - Sofia Kenin wins maiden Slam in Melbourne
Also winning a maiden major in Melbourne was Sofia Kenin, crowned women's singles champion at the first Grand Slam of 2020. Seeded No. 14 and having never been past the fourth round in 11 previous Grand Slam appearances, Kenin secured seven victories to win her maiden major, beating world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the semifinals and former world No. 1 Garbiñe Muguruza from a set down in the final.
Kenin's victory made her the youngest American to win a Grand Slam singles title since Serena Williams captured three at the same age in 2002, and the WTA Player of the Year came out on top of a ballot that also included Jennifer Brady, who had a breakthrough run to the US Open semifinals; Danielle Collins, who reached the final eight in Paris; and former Arizona State star Desirae Krawczyk, who reached her first Grand Slam doubles final at the French Open.
Newcomer of the Year - Katrina Scott
While she only played one official tournament in 2020, 16-year-old Katrina Scott made tennis fans take notice in New York. A wild card into the women's field at the US Open - in fact, the last wild card awarded just days prior to the start of main draw play - Scott defeated former world No. 54 Natalia Vikhlyantseva in the opening round for her first WTA-level victory in her major debut.
The teenager was a set away from the third round as well, as she put in an inspired performance against compatriot and No. 22 seed Amanda Anisimova before falling in three sets. Ranked No. 637 in the world coming into the tournament, the first-round victory allowed Scott to move up nearly 200 spots in the WTA rankings.
Most Improved Player - J.J. Wolf
Turning professional at the end of 2019, former Ohio State Buckeye J.J. Wolf had a career year in 2020 that was hardly slowed by the hiatus brought on by the pandemic. Wolf posted a 15-3 record in five tournaments played to begin the season, winning two titles at ATP Challenger events. Upon resumption in August, he successfully qualified for the Western & Southern Open, and later reached the third round of the US Open as a wild card, beaten there by 2019 finalist Daniil Medvedev.
Beginning 2020 ranked world No. 185, Wolf cut 65 places off his ranking to reach a career-high of No. 120 in September.
Upset of the Year - Coco Gauff def. Naomi Osaka, 6-3, 6-4 - Australian Open third round
Four months after losing to her under the lights inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, Coco Gauff exacted a measure of revenge against defending champion Naomi Osaka inside Rod Laver Arena at January's Australian Open. After winning just three games in defeat in New York, Gauff flipped the script in every aspect in the pair's second meeting, as she landed 75 percent of her first serves and ousted the defending champion in a 67-minute stunner on the Australian Open's biggest stage.
Still 15 at the time, Gauff became the youngest player to defeat a Top 5 player since Jennifer Capriati beat Gabriela Sabatini at the 1991 US Open, and the youngest player in the Open era to dethrone a reigning champion at a Grand Slam.
Comeback Player of the Year - CiCi Bellis
After 18 months away from tennis and multiple wrist, arm and elbow surgeries, CiCi Bellis had a triumphant return to the professional tour in 2020. Though her comeback officially began in November, Bellis achieved several notable milestones in a shortened season this year, which included a third-round showing at the Australian Open in January, a quarterfinal appearance at the WTA event in Lexington, Ky. in July and a title at the ITF W80 event in Macon, Ga. in October.
Having fallen out of the world's Top 800 after her period of inactivity, Bellis scored five wins over Top 100 opposition in 2020, including a victory over No. 22 seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in Australia, and ended the year ranked World No. 133. After Bellis and US Open quarterfinalist Shelby Rogers each earned 42.5 percent of the initial fan vote, Bellis edged the run-off vote by a margin of 50.8 to 49.2 percent.
