2022 ATP Finals, Day 2: Krajicek makes debut

Arthur Kapetanakis | November 14, 2022

Austin Krajicek rose to a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 9 earlier in November, a reward for a career year in which he won three ATP Tour tiles and 40 matches. On Monday, the 32-year-old American enjoyed another benefit from his standout season as he made his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Teaming with Croatia's Ivan Dodig, the Tampa native stepped onto the court at Turin's Pala Alpitour as the pair opened their campaign in the Green Group.

Despite a 4-6, 6-3, [10-7] defeat against Croatians Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, the fifth seeds can take plenty of positive from their opening match. Thanks to the unique, round-robin format of the season finale, they are still very much alive in the hunt for a semifinal place.

Krajicek—a former college standout at Texas A&M— and Dodig won titles this season in Lyon, Naples and Basel and reached four additional finals, including at Roland Garros. They will continue their Turin campaign on Wednesday against Australian Open champs Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

On Tuesday in Turin, two Americans will be back in action in a bid to improve to 2-0 on the week After an opening win against Rafael Nadal, Taylor Fritz faces US Open finalist Casper Ruud in the evening session. Also in the night sessions, Rajeev Ram will team with Joe Salisbiury to take on Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.

Ram (Illinois) and Krajicek are two of seven former college players in the doubles field.
