2022 Australian Open: Anisimova stuns Osaka as 6 Americans reach singles R16
Amanda Anisimova saved two match points in a stunning three-set win over defending Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka. The 20-year-old American forced a third-set tiebreak after erasing those two match points on serve at 4-5, then used a flawless finish to complete the upset, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
"Going into this match I knew I had to be playing sharp if I wanted to give myself a chance," Anisimova said on court after the victory, which ended with a 10-5 tiebreak. "Naomi is always going to be playing well. She's an absolute champion, so I knew that I really had to step up my game and try to be aggressive.
"I think that's what I started doing in the second set. Honestly, I am grateful that I was able to play so well today and get this win. It means a lot."
The American is now 8-0 in the new year following her title run at the Melbourne Summer Set, and will put that perfect record on the line against world No. 1 and home favorite Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round. That matchup is scheduled for 3 a.m. ET on Sunday morning as the opening night-session match in Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena.
Anisimova is joined by No. 21 seed Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Danielle Collins in the Round of 16, with Anisimova, Pegula and Keys all in the top half of the draw.
Like Anisimova, both Keys and Collins came from a set down and went deep into a third set to secure their fourth-round places. Keys won a 10-2 third-set tiebreak to close out a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win against China's Qiang Wang, while Collins beat Denmark's Clara Tauson, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Pegula, who dropped the opening set of her AO campaign, has now won six straight after a 7-6, 6-2 win over Nuria Parrizas Dias of Spain.
On the men's side, Taylor Fritz are Maxime Cressy are flying the flag for Team USA into the Round of 16. Fritz, the top-ranked American man, advanced to the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time behind a 6-0, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Spanish No. 15 seed Roberto Bautista Agut. Cressy extended his own career-best major run with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 result over Australian wild card Christopher O'Conell.
In doubles action, Rajeev Ram's title defense is off to a flying start in the men's competition, as he and British partner Joe Salisbury have cruised into the last 16 without dropping a set. Marcos Giron, teaming with South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon, is also into the third round thanks to victory in a third-set tiebreak.
The all-American women's doubles team of Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk is also through to the Round of 16, as are Americans Nicole Melichar-Martinez (part of the fifth-seeded pairing with American-born Chilean Alexa Guarachi), Caroline Dolehide (part of the ninth-seeded team with Australia's Storm Sanders), Bernarda Pera (with Maga Linette of Poland), Shelby Rogers (with Croatia's Petra Martic).
The Australian Open boys' and girls' singles competitions are also underway, where Bruno Kuzuhara is the boys' No. 1 seed.
More action Down Under begins at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday in the U.S., with coverage on ESPN and ESPN+. For more from Melbourne, including complete draws, order of play and more, visit the official Australian Open website.
