Asia Muhammad wins 2025 Indian Wells doubles title, cementing Top 10 status
Three weeks after making her Top 10 debut in the the WTA doubles rankings, Asia Muhammad cemented her status in that elite group by winning her second WTA 1000 title in Indian Wells.
The 33-year-old American is up to a new career-high of world No. 8 after teaming with Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands to claim her 12th WTA doubles trophy in Southern California. The desert triumph earned Muhammad her third WTA doubles title in eight months, all on U.S. soil. In August, she won in Washington, D.C., with compatriot Taylor Townsend and scored her first WTA 1000 trophy in Cincinnati with Erin Routliffe.
In Saturday's Indian Wells final, Muhammad and Schuurs defeated Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia and Olivia Nicholls of Great Britain, 6-2, 7-6(4), to win their first title as a team. The American-Dutch duo saved two set points on serve at 4-5 in the second set en route to the championship.
"Today was tough," Muhammad said after the final. "We obviously really wanted to win, and I think we did a really good job trying to stay positive and keep up our communication, because that's what we have been doing really well this week. I think in the end that helped us a lot today."
The pair lost just one set in their five Indian Wells victories, edging top seeds Townsend and Katerina Siniakova, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8, in the semifinals. They opened their campaign with a 6-4, 6-0 result over Italian third seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
Muhammad and Schuurs played two events together in 2024 and have become regular partners this season, reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open and the WTA 1000s in Doha and Dubai.
Last October, Muhammad reached her third of what is now four WTA 1000 finals, teaming with Jessica Pegula in Wuhan. Muhammad and Pegula will both represent the U.S. in Billie Jean King Cup qualifying next month in Bratislava, where the Americans will take on hosts Slovakia and Denmark from April 11-13.
