ATP, WTA, ITF announce COVID-19 suspensions into July

Arthur Kapetanakis | May 15, 2020

In separate press releases, the ATP, WTA and ITF announced further suspensions into July, due to COVID-19. The ATP and ITF have both suspended all tournaments through July 31, while the WTA announced that events in Bastad, Lausanne, Bucharest and Jurmala will not be held.

The ATP suspensions impact the first two events of the 2020 US Open Series, the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, R.I., and the Truist Atlanta Open.

“Just like tennis fans, players and tournament hosts all over the world, we share in the disappointment the Tour continues to be affected in this way," said ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi. "We continue to assess all of our options in an effort to resume the Tour as soon as it is safe to do so, including the feasibility of rescheduling events later in the season."

WTA spokesperson added: "We regret this is the case but will continue to be guided by medical experts for when it is safe and possible to return to WTA competition. We continue to monitor the situation closely and are hopeful to be back on the court as soon as possible."

The ITF suspension includes ITF Juniors, ITF Seniors, the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, Beach Tennis Tour and the men’s and women’s ITF World Tennis Tour.

"We continue to review the global situation and assess all our options to resume international competition the moment it is safe to do so," said ITF president David Haggerty. "We are working closely with tennis stakeholders to review the calendar and make the right decisions together.”

Further updates are expected in June.
