AO Rewind: Roddick, Davenport, Korda highlight junior success
American juniors have won five singles titles and eight doubles crowns through the years in Melbourne, with the 2000 boys' singles title from eventual junior and pro world No. 1 Andy Roddick being the standout result. Roddick, who defeated Mario Ancic in the final, went on to win the US Open boys' singles title that same year, before winning the 2003 US Open men's singles title.
He is joined by 2005 champion Donald Young and 2018 champ Sebastian Korda (pictured above) as former American AO junior singles winners. Most recently, Emilio Nava finished as the boys' runner-up in 2019. Stefan Kozlov was also a finalist in 2014, when he fell to 2020 US Open men's singles finalist Alexander Zverev.
In the girls' singles event, Kim Kessaris (1989) and Taylor Townsend (2012) have both claimed solo victory for Team USA. The 2012 junior Australian Open was one to remember for Townsend, as she also won the girls' doubles title alongside compatriot Gabrielle Andrews.
A total of four all-American junior doubles duos have lifted the title Down Under, while American juniors also teamed up with foreign partners for doubles glory on four occasions. In addition to Townsend and Andrews, the all-U.S. trophy-winners are Scott Oudsema and Phillip Simmons (2003); Oudsema and Brendan Evans (2004); and Lindsay Davenport and Nicole London (2012).
Davenport would go on to become both a singles and doubles world No. 1 at the pro level, winning three singles and three doubles Grand Slam trophies in her legendary career.
Like Oudsema, Corina Morariu was a repeat junior champ for Team USA. She teamed with Ludmila Varmuzova of the Czech Republic to be the last team standing in both 1994 and 1995. In 2009, Christina McHale won the doubles event with Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic 2009, while Carson Branstine paired with Canada's Bianca Andreescu for the 2017 title.
