Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz lead U.S. to 2025 United Cup title

The United States is the United Cup champion for the second time in three years after Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz led the nation to the 2025 title on Sunday in Sydney.

Gauff beat world No. 2 Iga Swiatek, 6-4, 6-4, to put the U.S. on the board against Poland—capping a perfect 5-0 singles week for the 20-year-old—before Fritz clinched the trophy with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) victory against Hubert Hurkacz.

"It's amazing. It's almost more fun to win the team events because you have people to celebrate with afterwards," Fritz said after notching his fourth singles victory of the competition. "Coco made it easy for me as the MVP on the team. It definitely helped my job a lot and it's great to get it a second time," continued the American, who also clinched the 2023 United Cup title for the U.S. in the event's inaugural year.

"It's great to win a team event, the only team event I've ever won, so I'm super excited," added Gauff.

With wins against Canada, Croatia, China, Czechia and Poland, the American squad posted a perfect 5-0 record at the United Cup and a 13-1 overall match record, including an 8-0 mark in the knockout rounds. They were pushed to a decisive doubles rubber just once, when Fritz and Gauff teamed to beat Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez in their opening tie.

Gauff did not drop a set in her seven matches on the week, including two doubles wins. Her final victory against Swiatek was her second consecutive win over the Pole, whom she also beat in straight sets on her way to the 2024 WTA Finals title.

"I have the belief that I'm one of the best players in the world. When I play good tennis, I'm hard to beat," Gauff said after beating Swiatek on Sunday. "Today I think I played some great tennis. I'm glad I was able to get a point for Team USA. It was tough today, I'm not going to lie."

Gauff also defeated Fernandez, Donna Vekic, Zhang Shuai and Karolina Muchova during the United Cup run, while Fritz notched singles wins against Borna Coric, Zhang Zhizhen, Tomas Machac and Hurkacz. As a pair, the American duo went 2-0 in doubles.

Their United Cup success event leaves America's two highest-ranked singles players—world No. 4 Fritz and world No. 3 Gauff—primed for the 2025 Australian Open, which begins Sunday in Melbourne. The title-winning United Cup squad also included Denis Kudla, Danielle Collins, Robert Galloway and Desirae Krawczyk. The Americans were captained by Michael Russell, coach of Taylor Fritz and the 2024 ATP Coach of the Year.
