Danielle Collins, Maxime Cressy named Team USA Players of the Month for January
If January was any harbinger for the rest of 2022, it very well may be a year that could see any number of American pros attain new career heights and high-level successes.
Having helped carry the proverbial torches for the stars and stripes on both sides of the singles draws at the Australian Open, Danielle Collins and Maxime Cressy have been named by USTA Player Development as its Players of the Month for January.
Each was chosen from a group of worthy candidates who started their new seasons on eye-catching trajectories in the new year.
Collins, of course, reached her first Grand Slam singles final in Melbourne to break into the Top 10 for the first time. The 28-year-old St. Petersburg, Fla., native and two-time NCAA singles champion at Virginia is now ranked No. 11 and paces the 10 American women in the Top 60.
Included among those are Player of the Month finalists Madison Keys—who put together a 10-match win streak, won a WTA singles title in Adelaide and reached the semifinals in Melbourne—and Amanda Anisimova, who started the year 8-1 in singles and also won a singles title at the WTA 250 warm-up event in Melbourne.
Cressy, the former NCAA doubles champion out of UCLA, started the year 11-3 in singles, with two of those losses coming to Rafael Nadal, in the finals of the ATP 250 warm-up event in Melbourne, and Daniil Medvedev, in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open.
Cressy, now ranked No. 59, makes it nine American men ranked in the Top 60, with Taylor Fritz now leading the way as the top-ranked American at No. 19, after having made the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in Melbourne.
