David Wagner to Compete at French Open
In the second year of Quad division play on the clay courts of Roland Garros, American David Wagner will fly the flag to represent Team USA in the 2020 French Open wheelchair tournament.
With wheelchair tennis having featured at all four Grand Slams since 2007, the quad division debuted in Paris last year, where Wagner reached the championship match in singles and won the doubles title with Australia's Dylan Alcott.
This year, as the only American competing in any of the three disciplines of the tournament, the world No. 3 will open his singles campaign against Great Britain's Andy Lapthorne, the No. 2 seed, in the four-man knockout draw. In doubles, he will partner Sam Schroder of the Netherlands, just as he did at last month's US Open.
Schroder, 20, won his first Grand Slam title in his debut in New York last month. He and Wagner will bid to win the doubles crown on the Parisian clay against the pairing of Lapthorne and world No. 1 Alcott.
The 46-year-old American has not won a Grand Slam title in singles since the 2017 US Open, though his doubles triumph in Paris last year extended his streak of years with at least one major title won to seven.
In Grand Slam play this year, Wagner was the Quad doubles runner-up at both the Australian and US Opens. The American partnered Lapthorne in Melbourne and teamed with Schroder in New York, but lost three-set affairs in the final to Alcott and his respective partner on both occasions.
Wheelchair play begins in Paris on Wednesday. For the Order of Play in full, visit rolandgarros.com, and click here to see the Quad wheelchair draws.
