Watch on YouTube: Andy Roddick vs. Jack Brasington, 2001 US Open men's singles second round
Andy Roddick, who turned 19 during the 2001 US Open, was playing for just the second time in the New York men's draw. He had won the boys' singles title in 2000, and also competed in that year's men's event as a wild card, falling to Spain's Albert Costa in the opening round.
Roddick returned to the big leagues in 2001 as the No. 18 seed, and basked in the spotlight of his Arthur Ashe Stadium debut by breezing past Slava Dosedel of the Czech Republic in straight sets.
His second-round opponent, American qualifier Jack Brasington, saved a match point in the first round of what was his Grand Slam main-draw debut, escaping Italian Gianluca Pozzi in a fifth-set tiebreak.Brasington was a contemporary of Roddick's older brother, John, on the junior circuit, and Andy had befriended and often hit with him as a youngster.
Despite coming in as the less-heralded of the two Americans, Brasington gave a good account of himself in what ended up as the highest-profile match of his career, taking a set and nearly sending the contest into a fifth with a late surge.
Roddick was emerging as a blockbuster attraction for American tennis fans, and he would secure his place in the hearts of the tennis public with an endearing 2001 quarterfinal run that ended only at the hands of eventual champ Lleyton Hewitt. Roddick famously took the No. 4 seed to five sets in that epic quarterfinal, with an unwelcome far-side overrule leading to his unraveling as he served to stay in the match at 4-5 in the fifth.
He would win the US Open two years later, in 2003, a year he finished as the ATP's No. 1-ranked player. Today, 17 years later, he remains the last American man to achieve that feat.
