Watch on YouTube: CoCo Vandeweghe vs. Alison Riske, 2017 US Open women's singles first round
The 2017 US Open women's singles tournament is best remembered for its all-American semifinal lineup, featuring eventual champion Sloane Stephens, finalist Madison Keys, Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe.
For Vandeweghe, the Team USA theme started in Round 1, when the No. 20 seed took on compatriot Alison Riske. It was a tough first-round draw for both players, with Riske—who currently sits at a career-high WTA ranking of No. 19—ranked inside the Top 50 at the time. It was the 10th of 11 career meetings between the pair, who split two prior matchups in 2017 at Dubai (Riske in straights) and Wimbledon (Vandeweghe in straights).
Their third encounter went three sets, and it was the underdog Riske who came out of the blocks quickest to take the opening set. But Vandweghe, who also won a three-setter against No. 10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in Round 3, battled back to secure the first of her five wins in New York that fortnight.
Vandeweghe's semifinal run capped off a career year at the majors, with an Australian Open semifinal and a Wimbledon quarterfinal already on her 2017 resume. Riske, who reached the Wimbledon quarters in 2019 for her strongest major performance to date, counts her 2013 US Open fourth-round run as her best in New York.
Their head-to-head currently stands at 7-4, in favor of Vandeweghe.
