Watch on YouTube: Jack Sock vs. Taylor Fritz, 2016 US Open men's singles first round
Team USA Davis Cup teammates Jack Sock and Taylor Fritz were on opposite sides of the net at the start of the 2016 US Open. In the last tournament with matches played in the old Louis Armstrong Stadium, a 23-year-old Sock and an 18-year-old Fritz dueled for five sets in the stadium posthumously named for the Queens resident and iconic jazz musician.
The more experienced Sock, seeded No. 24, had the better of the early stages, topping Fritz in two tight sets to take command. But the youngster fired back in the third and fourth sets as day turned to night in Armstrong, setting up a dramatic fifth set under the lights.
Both decked out in flashy, green Nike kits, the Americans flashed their skills in front of an appreciative home crowd for three hours, 21 minutes, before a forehand winner from Sock sealed his passage to the Round 2.
Sock went on to defeat 2014 US Open champ and No. 7 seed Marin Cilic to reach the Round of 16. He lost there, to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but his fourth-round run matched his career-best Grand Slam performance at the 2015 French Open. The following year, in 2017, Sock finished the season at a career-best No. 8 in the ATP Rankings.
Fritz later reached the third round in New York in 2018, matching his career-best Slam result at the Australian Open in both 2018 and 2019. He currently sits at a career-high ranking of No. 24 at the age of 22.
The Sock-Fritz showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel, or below.
