Full Match Video: Keys vs. Kenin, 2019 US Open

Arthur Kapetanakis | April 14, 2020

With the current suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours, we are opening up our US Open vault to bring you full match videos of classic encounters through the years in New York.

Madison Keys has always found her best tennis in New York, having reached at least the Round of 16 each year since 2015. That streak faced a tough test in the 2019 third round, when Keys—on the heels of final and semifinal runs the two years prior—faced compatriot and Fed Cup teammate Sofia Kenin.

Kenin, whose age matched her No. 20 seed at the time, was seeking to further elevate her breakout 2019 season with what would have been her second fourth-round appearance at a major. While she would go on to Grand Slam glory at the 2020 Aussie Open, it was Keys who reigned supreme on this night in the familiar setting of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Keys required a mid-match doctor visit for a check on her blood pressure, and a nervy finale would have done little to mitigate any further stress. Despite facing a pair of break points when serving for the match, Keys managed to hang on and complete the victory without dropping serve on the night.

For Keys, it was her eighth matchup against a fellow American at the US Open. She now sports a sharp 6-2 record in those encounters, with her only two losses coming against Serena Williams (2015 fourth round) and Sloane Stephens (2017 final).

The Keys-Kenin showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel, or below.
