Watch on YouTube: Monica Seles vs. Jennifer Capriati, 2000 US Open women's singles fourth round
Two of the leading ladies of American tennis during their largely overlapping careers, Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati met 14 times on the WTA Tour from 1990-2002, with Seles leading the head-to-head, 9-5.
Both women are former world No. 1s, though Capriati had yet to earn that distinction at the time of their 2000 US Open encounter. Seles first reached the summit in 1991, during a GOAT-like stretch in which she won seven of the eight majors she entered, missing out only on Wimbledon in 1991 through injury and in 1992 through a final loss to world No. 2 Steffi Graf.
Capriati's ranking peak would come in 2001, on the heels of back-to-back major titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Those victories kicked off a stretch of six consecutive Grand Slams reaching the semis or better, and a stretch of two calendar years reaching at least the quarterfinals of every Slam.
Nine-time Grand Slam champion Seles got the better of three-time major winner Capriati in this, their third and final US Open meeting. Seles swept their three US Open matches, in 1991, 1999 and 2000. Shewould go on to lose to world No. 1 Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals, with Venus Williams going on to win the first of her two consecutive New York titles.
The complete Seles-Capriati showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel, or below.
