Watch on YouTube (or below): Venus vs. Serena Williams, 2001 US Open women's singles final
The 2001 women's single final was set to make history, even before Serena and Venus Williams found themselves across the net in the championship match. The sisters' first career Grand Slam final meeting--an iconic moment in itself--was doubly significant because it came in the US Open's first primetime women's final.
The Saturday evening showcase put the USTA's commitment to women's tennis on full display, offering a fitting stage for two women who would be at the forefront of the women's game in the U.S. and the world for the next two decades.
Despite their relative youth--Venus was 21 at the time, Serena, 19--the two were already blockbuster attractions, with four Grand Slams between them. Serena's lone major title at the time came at the 1999 US Open title, while Venus lifted the New York trophy in 2000, along with a pair of Wimbledon triumphs in 2000 and 2001.
The full match, plus scores of other great video content, is now available on our USTA YouTube channel and below.
