Watch on YouTube: Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams, 2015 US Open women's singles quarterfinals
Serena Williams was seeking the calendar-year Grand Slam at the 2015 US Open, and stood three wins away from accomplishing that historic feat when she took the court to face sister Venus in the quarterfinals. The world No. 1 previously survived a third-round scare against Bethanie Mattek-Sands, in which she was two games away from defeat in the second set, but won eight of nine total sets she played in New York entering the quarters.
That quarterfinal was Serena's third straight all-American matchup; after topping wild card Mattek-Sands, she got past No. 19 seed Madison Keys in the Round of 16. Venus, seeded No. 23, endured a pair of three-setters to open her US Open run, getting through Monica Puig and Irina Falconi before upsetting No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic in straight sets in Round 3 and breezing past qualifier Anett Kontaveit in the Round of 16.
It was the 27th career meeting between the sisters, with Serena leading the head-to-head, 15-11, going in. (Serena currently leads the rivalry, 18-12, with their most recent meeting coming in the third round of the 2018 US Open.)
The sisters battled for three sets under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, making it the 11th (and to date, last) three-set affair in their on-court rivalry. In the end, Serena sealed victory with an ace, moving within two wins of the calendar-year Slam.
But in the semis, her run ended with a shock defeat to Italy's Roberta Vinci. Despite the loss, she ended the year atop the WTA Rankings for the third consecutive year, and her sixth year overall.
