Full US Open Match Video: Stephens vs. Venus, 2017 semifinals

Arthur Kapetanakis | March 26, 2020

With the current suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours, we are opening up our US Open vault to bring you full match videos of classic encounters through the years in New York.

Watch on YouTube: Sloane Stephens vs. Venus Williams, 2017 US Open women's singles semifinals

Venus Williams was enjoying a vintage year in 2017. Eight years on from her previous Grand Slam final appearance at Wimbledon in 2009, the former world No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam singles champ had reached the championship match at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon that season. Then, she came within two points of repeating that feat in New York.

Sloane Stephens, on the other hand, spent much of 2017 in rehab after a foot surgery in January. But she returned for the summer hard-court swing, and traded a protective boot for a protective ranking to enter the US Open.

After taking turns dominating the first two semifinal sets, both women laid it all on the line in a classic third. Some magnificent retrieving kept Stephens in the match late on, and her defense remained impenetrable down the stretch as she pulled off a statement victory in this battle of generations in American tennis.

The full match, plus scores of other great video content, is now available on our USTA YouTube channel and below.
