Watch on YouTube: Sofia Kenin vs. Lauren Davis, 2017 US Open women's singles first round
Watch 18-year-old Sofia Kenin, a junior US Open finalist in 2015, secure her first Grand Slam win playing in her third career US Open, against fellow American Lauren Davis. It was also Kenin's third career Grand Slam overall.
The first three of Kenin's US Open women's singles appearances at the time came via wild card. She made her debut in 2015 after earning her spot by winning the USTA Girls' 18s national title, then US Open Wild Card Challenge (on the strength of her USTA Pro Circuit results) in both 2016 and 2017.
After falling to Mariana Duque Marino (2015) and Karolina Pliskova (2016), Kenin got past the No. 32-seeded Davis in 2017 for her first victory at her home Slam. She then took out another compatriot, qualifier Sachia Vickery, in a third-set tiebreak in Round 2, before bowing out against fellow wild card Maria Sharapova in Round 3.
Her 2017 run was the first of three consecutive third-round runs in New York, and that taste of major success helped pave the way for her to win the 2020 Australian Open women's singles title in what was her 12th major appearance.
The complete first-round showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel, or below.
