Watch on YouTube: Todd Martin vs. Michael Chang, 2000 US Open second round
In the last of their seven ATP meetings, and their only meeting at a major, U.S. legends Todd Martin (then 30) and Michael Chang (28) squared off at the 2000 US Open. Both men were unseeded (only 16 players were seeded at the time), though Martin had reached a career high of world No. 4 less than 12 months earlier, following a run to the 1999 US Open final, which he lost to Andre Agassi in five sets.
Chang, the 1989 French Open champion, reached the final in New York in 1996, when he fell to Pete Sampras. He reached a career-best ranking of No. 2 following that showing.
Despite finishing their head-to-head on the wrong side of a 5-2 record, Martin won this final matchup going away, in straight sets. His early-round efficiency—Martin dropped just one set in his first three matches—helped him summon the energy to complete a stirring comeback from two sets down against Carlos Moya in the Round of 16. That match, which ended after 1 a.m. in Arthur Ashe Stadium, endures as one of the classic Martin moments, punctuated with a celebratory racquet smash in front of a delirious American crowd.
Backing up his '99 final jaunt, he would go on to reach the semis in 2000 before falling to eventual champ Marat Safin. (Safin's 2000 championship won our recent US Open Bracket of Champions challenge through a fan vote.)
Today, Martin is the CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He also spent brief stints coaching Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish after his playing career ended following the 2004 US Open.
Chang has been the coach of Kei Nishikori since the conclusion of his hall-of-fame career at the 2003 US Open.
