Full US Open Match Video: Venus vs. Serena, 2005

Arthur Kapetanakis | June 30, 2020

With the current suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours, we are opening up our US Open vault to bring you full match videos of classic encounters through the years in New York.

Watch on YouTube: Venus Williams vs. Serena Williams, 2005 US Open women's singles fourth round

This 2005 matchup was the third between the Williams sisters at the US Open, but the first time they met before the championship round.

Both Americans cruised to the fourth round in '05, with No. 10 seed Venus Williams beating Daniela Hantuchova in Round 3, and No. 8 Serena Williams defeating Francesca Schiavone. Neither sister dropped a set in the first three rounds.

In the Round of 16, Venus took the opening set in a tiebreak—the first tiebreak the sisters contested at the US Open—before surging ahead in set two to advance.

She then faced eventual champion Kim Clijsters in the quarterfinals. Despite taking the opening set (making it nine sets played, nine sets won for the tournament), Venus could not close out from 5-all in the second set as her No. 4-seeded opponent advanced in three.

The complete fourth-round, sisterly showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel, or below.
