No. 3 seed Venus Williams reached the Round of 16 at the 2009 US Open, and her run included a competitive second-round meeting with compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Donning a stylish pink dress from her own EleVen brand, Williams got through a tight first set in the all-American matchup before taking command in the second. She would ultimately fall to wild card Kim Clijsters in three fourth-round sets, with the Belgian going on to become a surprise champion in her return from retirement.
