Pro Circuit Round-up: Brooksby, Min win singles titles

Arthur Kapetanakis | July 29, 2019

In two adjacent states in Middle America, Jenson Brooksby and Grace Min claimed USTA Pro Circuit titles.

Brooksby (pictured above), 18, ventured to Champaign, Ill., from his native California to win the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event, defeating University of Florida rising junior Oliver Crawford, 6-2, 6-1, in the final. Min, 25, won her 11th ITF singles title at the W25 event in Evansville, Ind., about 400 miles from her native Atlanta (where American Taylor Fritz reached the ATP 250 final).

There was also a pair of American doubles champions on the week, as Sanaz Marand and Caitlin Whoriskey took home the trophy at the W60 event in Ashland, Ky.

Brooksby, who reached the US Open boys’ singles semifinals in 2018, doubled his ITF title count with his result; he also won the M25 singles title in Bakersfield, Calif., in March. As the No. 3 seed in Champaign, he dropped just one set in five wins—the opening set of his second-round encounter with Govind Nanda. His title run also took him past former Fighting Illini teammates Keenan Mayo (quarterfinals) and Aleksandar Kovacevic (semis).

Ohio State commit and former Top-10 ITF junior Cannon Kingsley also reached the Champaign quarterfinals.

Min, a former WTA Top-100 player who trains at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., won her first title of 2019. She has now won at least one ITF title each year since 2014, with the biggest win coming at a $60,000 event in Lexington, Ky., in 2017. She won two three-setters as the No. 6 seed in Evansville, including a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 final victory over top-seeded Deniz Khazaniuk of Israel.

Natasha Subhash reached the semifinals in Indiana, while Kate Fahey and Elli Mandlik were singles quarterfinalists. Pamela Montez reached the doubles final.
