Keys joins Gauff, Pegula in WTA's Top 5; Townsend rises to doubles No. 2

For the first time since 2003, three Americans are among the Top 5 in the WTA singles rankings.

Reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys rose to a career-high of world No. 5 on Monday, joining No. 3 Coco Gauff and No. 5 Jessica Pegula in that elite group for the first time. Keys, who has not competed since winning her maiden Grand Slam title last month in Melbourne, moved ahead of Jasmine Paolini in the rankings after the Italian's third-round defeat as defending champion last week in Dubai. One week after turning 30 on Feb. 17, Keys is the 20th American to reach the WTA singles Top 5 since the rankings began in 1975.

Keys, Gauff and Pegula all played their first major final at the US Open, with Gauff winning her home Slam in 2023. Keys was a 2017 finalist in New York, when she fell to Sloane Stephens in an all-American title match, while Pegula finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka  last summer.

The last time the U.S. had three women in the Top 5 was the week of Nov. 3, 2003, when Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati were No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

Townsend rises to doubles world No. 2 with Dubai title

In a rematch of the Australian Open final, American Taylor Townsend and Czech Katerina Siniakova again defeated Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-Wei to claim the Dubai WTA 1000 title. The 7-6(5), 6-4 victory earned the pair their third team trophy after triumphs at Wimbledon last year and in Melbourne last month.

With the victory, Towsend moved up one place to a new career high of No. 2 in the WTA doubles rankings behind only her partner. The 28-year-old was ranked as high as No. 5 in each of the past two years after returning from maternity leave in 2022.

All told, five Americans are among the Top 5 across the WTA and ATP singles and doubles rankings. Townsend is the highest-ranked U.S. player across all disciplines at No. 2, while Taylor Fritz is No. 4 in the men's singles rankings.

In addition to her Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, Townsend has also reached the final at the US Open (2022 with Caty McNally) and Roland Garros (2023 with Leylah Fernandez). She also finished runner-up in last year's US Open mixed doubles competition with compatriot Donald Young.
