Patrick Kypson, Nicolas Moreno De Alboran earn first ATP Tour wins in Delray Beach
A pair of Americans scored their first tour-level singles wins this week on home soil at the Delray Beach Open. Following recent titles on the USTA Pro Circuit, Patrick Kypson and Nicolas Moreno De Alboran have now translated that success to the ATP Tour.
Kypson, 24, defeated world No. 40 Miomir Kecmanovic, 6-4, 7-6(3) on Monday and backed up that result with another straight-sets win over Constant Lestienne on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals at the ATP 250.
“I'm super happy. I'm working really hard," Kypson said after his opening win, as quoted in an ATPTour.com feature.
But he downplayed his milestone moment, preferring to look ahead to the future: "I definitely don't feel any different waking up today than I do on any other day after a win," added the American, who is working with USTA national coach Dean Goldfine in Delray Beach.
"There are some things that I did well that I can build off of, and there's things that I still have a lot of meat on the bone to improve. So I definitely haven't arrived anywhere yet. [I am a] long way from arriving. But it's a good step.”
As a former titlist at USTA Boys' 18s National Championships, where he won a gold ball in 2017, Kypson is no stranger to success in the tennis world. He also played No. 1 singles for Texas A&M during the 2017-18 academic year. After a slew of injuries halted his progress as a professional, he is now reaping the rewards of a consistent stretch of competitive play.
Kypson entered the week at a career-high ATP ranking of No. 155 and has quickly moved up to No. 143 in the live rankings. He will bid to continue his rise when he meets either compatriot Marcos Giron or fourth seed Adrian Mannarino in the quarterfinals.
Moreno De Alboran picked up his first ATP win on Tuesday in a 6-2, 7-6(3) decision against fellow American Alexander Kovacevic, following a successful qualifying campaign in Delray Beach. The 26-year-old has qualified for each of his four ATP Tour main-draw appearances, including at the 2023 US Open and last week in Dallas, where he was beaten by eventual finalist Giron in the first round.
Next up in South Florida is a second-round meeting with Aussie Jordan Thompson, who beat Rafael Nadal earlier this season in Brisbane.
A New York City native, Moreno De Alboran is a two-time singles champion on the ATP Challenger Tour, including a USTA Pro Circuit triumph last June in Tyler, Texas.
