Meet the Metz... champion.

A long way from the New York Mets' ballpark, just across the boardwalk from the US Open in Queens, American Learner Tien won his first ATP Tour title Sunday in Metz, France. The first American teenager to lift a tour-level title since Andy Roddick in 2002, Tien also secured his Top 30 debut and a likely seed at the 2026 Australian Open with the triumph.

The 19-year-old lefty defeated seventh seed Cameron Norrie, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6) in the final, coming back from 5-1 down in the decisive tiebreak, and also beat former world No. 6 Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals at the ATP 250.

"I never take it for granted, just coming out here and competing. So holding this trophy just means the world to me, and I'm just really grateful," Tien said during the trophy ceremony before thanking his team, which includes former world No. 2 Michael Chang and Erik Kortland as coaches.

In a later ATP Tour interview, he added: "[Winning a title] was a big goal I had coming into the season. It was the last week of the year. I really wanted to make it happen. So, it means a lot."

Tien opened his 2025 season with a bang, stunning Daniil Medvedev en route to the Australian Open fourth round, and now finishes on another high note. He closes the year with five Top 10 wins and two final appearances, having reached his first ATP Tour title match in September in Beijing, where he was beaten by Jannik Sinner.

Runner-up last season at the Next Gen ATP Finals, Tien has again qualified for the 20-and-under showcase this season in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Scheduled for Dec. 17-21, the event doubles as a preseason tuneup for the game's top young talent.
