Marathon Man: Sock Plays 33 in 33
Jack Sock has been racking up plenty of matches – and wins – in an outstanding finish to his 2016 season.
The Nebraska native and top-ranked American man has competed in 33 ATP World Tour matches over the past 33 days, including doubles, with only six days off during that stretch. Sock has been in the final Sunday of his past four tournaments for either singles or doubles.
In addition to reaching the singles final two weeks ago at the ATP World Tour event Stockholm (he lost to Juan Martin del Potro in the final), Sock has earned doubles titles in Basel (with Marcel Granollers) and Shanghai (with John Isner), and he finished runner-up in Beijing (with Bernard Tomic).
The American has also recorded Top 10 wins in the past two months over Marin Cilic (at the US Open) and Milos Raonic (in Shanghai).
At this week’s ATP World Tour event in Paris, Sock has also impressed fans with his class and sportsmanship. During his round-of-16 match Thursday against world No. 19 Richard Gasquet, Sock conceded an ace to the Frenchman. The ball was called out, but rather than force Gasquet to challenge the call, Sock tipped his cap and moved to the next point, drawing a long round of applause from the crowd. The American went on to win the match in three sets.
Sock’s season ended in singles on Friday in Paris with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 loss to fellow American Isner in the quarterfinals. He’s still alive in the doubles draw, however, and plays his quarterfinal match with another American, Nicholas Monroe.
