Dana Mathewson Sweeps Singles, Doubles in l’Ile de Ré
U.S. No. 1 Dana Mathewson is coming home from a month-long stay in France with a pair of trophies.
After making personal and national history in her French Open debut, becoming the first American woman to play at the clay-court Grand Slam, Mathewson won the singles and doubles titles at the Toyota Open International De L’ile De Re, an ITF Series 2 event on hard courts.
Seeded No. 2 in the singles draw, Mathewson lost just one set in three wins, beating Pauline Deroulede of France, 6-3, 6-0; Viktoriia Lvova of Russia, 6-2, 6-1; and Great Britain's Lucy Shuker in the final, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. The win over Shuker, the world No. 12, is just Mathewson's fourth in 16 all-time career meetings against the British No. 2. On the strength of her sixth career singles title, Mathewson rises back to a career-high ranking of world No. 9.
Partnering Germany's Katharina Kruger as the top seeds, Mathewson also won the doubles title over Shuker and Chile's Macarena Cabrillana for her 18th career doubles title.
In the men's event, Casey Ratzlaff reached the singles quarterfinals and finished as the doubles runner-up alongside Spain's Daniel Caverzaschi. Seeded No. 2, the pair dropped just a combined eight games in their quarterfinal and semifinal matches before losing out to the top-seeded Dutch pair of Ruben Spaargaren and Maikel Scheffers.
