Pegula, Fritz, Keys, Tiafoe to lead U.S. team at United Cup in 2023

Team USA will seek to extend its long tradition of international excellence in a brand new competition at the inaugural United Cup.

 

The newly announced mixed team event will bring men and women together under their nations' flags as 18 countries compete for the trophy in Australia. Set to kick off the new season, the event will be held from Dec. 29, 2022 to Jan. 8, 2023.

 

A strong American contingent will travel to the event, with four Top 20 singles players among the eight-player squad. World No. 3 Jessica Pegula leads the way, with Taylor Fritz, Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe rounding out the Top 20 talent. Doubles world No. 16 Desirae Krawczyk is also on the stacked roster, along with Denis Kudla, Alycia Parks and Hunter Reese.

 

Speaking to the official United Cup website, Tiafoe shared his excitement for the new-look competition: “Any team event is great for the game,” he said. “To see players come out for each other, get out their comfort zone, I think fans will enjoy it.

"And then, guys and girls playing together is great. I think it will only help their tour and ours. I think everybody wins. There are some high-level girls playing the game, especially Americans right now."

 

Other notable names to commit to the event include Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Maria Sakkari, Caroline Garcia and Nick Kyrgios.

 

The U.S. will head to Sydney to compete in Group C alongisde Germany and the Czech Republic. Other groups will compete in Brisbane and Perth, with the final knockout rounds set for Sydney.
