Pro Circuit Round-up: Johnson, Brengle, Dolehide win
Three Americans wrapped up their US Open preparations in style on the USTA Pro Circuit, as Steve Johnson, Madison Brengle and Caroline Dolehide all claimed singles titles in the last two weeks.
With the start of the US Open Qualifying Tournament on Aug. 19, the Pro Circuit grind enters a three-week hiatus, with action picking up again on Sept. 9, after the year's final Grand Slam.
Johnson (pictured above) took the ATP Challenger 90 title in Aptos, Calif., on Aug. 11, emerging from a field that also included semifinalist and eventual US Open Wild Card Challenge winner Ernesto Escobedo and quarterfinalist Marcos Giron.
That same week, Brengle took the ITF World Tennis Tour W60 title in Landisville, Pa., where Vicky Duval and Sophie Whittle both made the semis. In an all-U.S. final at the same event, Vania King and Claire Liu topped Hayley Carter and Jamie Loeb.
On Saturday, Dolehide defeated Ann Li in another all-American final, this one at the ITF WTT W60 event in Concord, Mass. Usue Arconada, Dolehide's teammate in winning Pan Am doubles gold earlier this month, was a semifinalist, while Allie Kick reached the quarters. Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes were the doubles champs in Concord, taking out fellow Americans Ellie Halbauer and Ingird Neel in the final.
Also lifting a title last week was the men's doubles duo of Ian Dempster and Korey Lovett, who triumphed at the ITF WTT M25 event in Memphis, Tenn.
Many of the stars of the USTA Pro Circuit will be in action at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York as the 2019 US Open gets underway.
