Roland Garros 2025: Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz spearhead American showing in singles draw

Macy Alcido | May 22, 2025

On Thursday, the Roland Garros 2025 men’s and women’s singles draws were announced in Paris–and America boasted quite a showing. A total of 33 Americans will compete in singles at this year’s second Grand Slam, including 18 women and 15 men. As they were at the Australian Open earlier this year, women’s No. 2 seed Coco Gauff and men’s No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz are the top-ranked Americans.

Gauff is joined by three other Americans in the Top 10 women’s singles seeds: No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 7 Madison Keys and No. 9 Emma Navarro. Also seeded are Amanda Anisimova (No. 16), Peyton Stearns (No. 18) and Sofia Kenin (No. 32).

Alongside Fritz, there are six American men seeded in Paris: No. 12 Tommy Paul, No. 13 Ben Shelton, No. 15 Frances Tiafoe, No. 23 Sebastian Korda, No. 28 Brandon Nakashima and No. 32 Alex Michelsen.

Gauff, Keys and Navarro stack the bottom quarter

The American women have a strong presence in the draw’s bottom half, with Gauff, Keys and Navarro ending up in the same quarter.

A favorite in this year’s French Open, Gauff will open against Australia’s Olivia Gadecki. She’s coming off of some impressive performances on clay (reaching the finals of both Rome and Madrid), but is still looking to clinch her second Grand Slam title since winning her first at the 2023 US Open.

Gauff could potentially meet former Roland Garros winner Barbora Krejcikova in the fourth round, and she could see either Navarro or Keys in the quarterfinals.

Keys will step onto the famed terre battue as the most recent Grand Slam singles champion, securing her first career major title at the 2025 Australian Open, where she shook off world No. 5 Iga Swiatek and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. She’ll open against a qualifier, but won’t have to face off against Sabalenka unless they both reach the final.

Depending on how quarterfinals play out, either Gauff, Keys or Navarro could meet Pegula in the tournament’s semifinal. Pegula, who recently nabbed her first WTA tour clay-court title at the Charleston Open, will go up against Romania’s Anca Todoni. Meanwhile, Navarro will begin the tournament with Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

American men pack the bottom half

Not only are Fritz and Tiafoe duking it out in the same section of the men’s draw, but they’re sharing the bottom half with fellow Americans Shelton and Paul.

Fritz, the 2024 US Open finalist, starts off against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. After the first round, he could see a few familiar faces, potentially meeting compatriot Alex Michelsen in the third round, along with another fellow American (either Sebastian Korda or Tiafoe) in the fourth round. In this section that he shares with Fritz, Tiafoe opens against Roman Safiullin.

Following his semifinal run in Rome for the second year in a row, Paul starts against a qualifier, but could eventually meet two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud in the fourth round. Shelton also faces some stiff competition in his section, opening against Italian player Lorenzo Sonego, with the potential to meet defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in Round 4.
