Roland Garros 2025: 8 Americans advance to Round of 16, most in 40 years

Arthur Kapetanakis | May 31, 2025

Eight Americans—five women and three men—have reached the singles Round of 16 at Roland Garros for the first time in 40 years. The last time the French Open fourth round featured eight or more American players was 1985, also with five women and three men.

This year's eight includes Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova, Hailey Baptiste, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. In 1985, the eight were Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Bonnie Gadusek, Terry Phelps, Debbie Spence, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and Aaron Krickstein.

“I think we are all pushing each other and working hard,” Tiafoe said of the American contingent. “There’s a window in the game, a lot of guys see a lot of opportunity and it helps when you see peers do well. It’s becoming a normality that we are going deep in Slams and having a look in. It’s not a surprise anymore.”

Tiafoe, Gauff and Anisimova have all notched three wins without dropping a set this fortnight, with Tiafoe winning an all-American battle against Sebastian Korda, 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4, in the third round.

Reigning Australian Open champ Madison Keys also knocked out a compatriot to reach the fourth round. The seventh seed edged Sofia Kenin, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Keys will next face another American—the unseeded Hailey Baptiste, who is enjoying her best Grand Slam run—for a place in the quarterfinals.

Ben Shelton made his own piece of U.S. history with his 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Italy's Matteo Gigante. By reaching the Paris fourth round for the first time, the 22-year-old became the fourth-youngest American man to reach the fourth round at all four majors, after Pete Sampras (20), Jim Courier (21) and Krickstein (21).
