Roland Garros 2025: Paul, Quinn earn comeback wins; 12 Americans into Round 3

The five U.S. men reaching the third round is also the most since six in 1996. The current quintet is made up of 12th seed Tommy Paul, 13th seed Ben Shelton, 15th seed Frances Tiafoe, 23rd seed Sebastian Korda and qualifier Ethan Quinn.

Both Paul and Quinn advanced with dramatic, five-set comebacks: Paul edged Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, while Quinn was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 7-5 winner against Kazakhstani Alexander Shevchenko.

Quinn cracked an incredible 92 winners Thursday to reach the third round at a major for the first time. The 21-year-old American, NCAA singles champion in 2023, saved two break points at 5-5 in the deciding set before triumphing in four hours and 14 minutes.

"The whole experience has been surreal. I didn't expect myself to get this far," said the former University of Georgia standout, who is competing in his second major main draw and first at Roland Garros.

On the women's side, second seed Coco Gauff, third seed Jessica Pegula, seventh seed Madison Keys, 16th seed Amanda Anisimova and 31st seed Sofia Kenin are joined by Bernarda Pera and Hailey Baptiste in the third round. Among that group, Pera was the lone American to surrender a second-round set; she upset 18th seed Donna Vekic, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(3), and will next face 13th seed Elina Svitolina.

Keys and Kenin, who have both won all four sets they've played this fortnight, will also meet in a third-round showdown. The other American matchups are: Gauff vs. Marie Bouzkova, Pegula vs. Marketa Vondrousova, Anisimova vs. 22nd seed Clara Tauson, and Baptiste vs. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
