Fritz, Tiafoe, Paul and Sock to represent U.S. for 2022 Davis Cup Finals
U.S. No. 1 Taylor Fritz will lead captain Mardy Fish's team next month at the 2022 Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals in Malaga, Spain. Fritz, along with Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Jack Sock, will aim to win the United States' 33rd Davis Cup title all-time.
The U.S. team reached the ultimate round of this year's Finals by defeating Colombia in the qualifying round in March, and then advancing from its pool in Glasgow, Scotland in the 16-nation group stage last month. The Finals in Malaga are an eight-nation, knockout bracket that will crown this year’s Davis Cup champion, and will be played from Nov. 22-27.
The U.S. will play its quarterfinal tie against Italy on Nov. 24, at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET), with the winner advancing to a semifinal tie against either Canada or Germany on Nov. 26. The other quarterfinal matches feature Croatia and host Spain, and the Netherlands and Australia. The U.S. has played Italy in each of the last two iterations of the Davis Cup Finals, winning in 2019 and losing in 2021. The U.S. is 8-4 all-time against the Italians in a rivalry that dates back to 1928.

Fritz, the top-ranked American man at No. 10, broke into the Top 10 earlier this month and will celebrate the achievement with his third Davis Cup appearance this year. The Californian has played in seven Davis Cup ties for the U.S. since debuting in 2019, when, at 21 years old, he became the youngest American to debut in the Top 25 since Andy Roddick in 2004.
Fritz is 2-2 in Davis Cup singles play this year, while Paul and Sock are also returning for another tour in this season's competition. Paul is 3-1 in Davis Cup competition in 2022, and his singles wins were integral in the U.S.' victories over Great Britain and Kazakhstan in Glasgow; Sock, who partnered Rajeev Ram in the U.S.' other Davis Cup ties this year, is 3-1 in doubles in the competition in 2022. That included a come-from-behind win over Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury in a 2-1 win over Great Britain that was crucial to the U.S. securing a berth in Malaga.
The veteran of the quartet headed to Spain, Sock is 12-5 overall in Davis Cup play in his career with a 6-2 mark in doubles.
US Open semifinalist Tiafoe is expected to make his first Davis Cup appearance since last year's group stage, where he won his first career Davis Cup match; he was named to Fish's initial squad for last month's group stage in Glasgow but later withdrew. The 24-year-old made his Davis Cup debut in 2018, and is currently ranked at a career-high of No. 17.
Each tie will be a best-of-three competition with two singles matches and one doubles match played on an indoor hard court inside Malaga's Palacio Deportes Martín Carpena. The full field, schedule and ticketing information is available at daviscupfinals.com.
